IMPLANTABLE DEVICES

Diagnostic implantable devices

Long term surface ECG recordings are routinely used for electrocardiographical diagnosis of arrhythmias. The recording period usually lasts anywhere from 24hrs (Holter) to one to four weeks. For longer periods, management of arrhythmias may imply subcutaneous implantation of a device of a variable size. The Medtronic Reveal is a very long term ECG recorder which allows automatic and patient activated storage of the recording for later analysis by the physician.

Diagnostic and therapeutic implantable devices

A pacemaker is a small device the size of a matchbook that prevents excessive heart rate slow down, when connected to electrodes positioned at various sites inside the heart.

A defibrillator is a slightly larger device which in addition to the pacemaker function, is able to instantly stop life threatening arrhythmias by means of an electrical shock directly inside the heart.
